Okay, here’s a fun one for you all. Everybody enjoys a good list from time to time, everybody enjoys diamonds and everybody enjoys movies, so lets combine these three loves. Here’s a little list of the top 10 movies about diamonds ever made. Enjoy.
10. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Okay, let’s get the silliest one out of the way first. Set in India, Indy has to save a bunch of kidnapped children from the evil and malicious cult leader, Mola Ram. Crazy old Mola believes that if he collects all five Sankara Stones, he can rule the…ahem…. world. This might not be the most credible use of diamonds in a film, but it’s a fun movie nevertheless.
9. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Yes, this is a fantastic film, but it only scrapes into this list because it really has very little to do with diamonds. But how could it possibly be excluded when the it features the one and only Marilyn Monroe performing “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend”. She plays the biggest gold-digger of them all and she still steals the show with this number.
8. Marathon Man
This one features a classic Dustin Hoffman performance, which involves him very convincingly swallowing a diamond in one of the scenes. In a nutshell, Hoffman plays a marathon runner who somehow gets caught up in a complex little quandary, involving a Nazi trying sell diamonds that he’d stolen from Jews in Auschwitz.
Guy Ritchie’s second film, which basically all of hollywood lined up to be a part of after the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Actually Snatch is a similar movie to the first, it features various London gangsters clamoring to get a piece of the jewels, which in this case is a whopping 84 carat diamond.
6. To Catch a Thief
This is Alfred Hitchcock at his best here. Cary Grant stars as a retired jewel thief known simply as “the Cat”. He’s been framed after a number of heists occurred, in which multiple diamonds were stolen. Grant must use his cat burglar skills to evade the cops and find the bad guys.
One of the greatest romance films of all time, despite the Celine Dion song. The boat sinking kind of steals the show, but really this movie is a tragic love story that centres around the real life Hope Diamond or “the Heart of the Sea”, which was given to Rose Calvert by her lover, before he died aboard the doomed vessel.
4. The Pink Panther
This series of films follows the infuriatingly funny Inspector Clouseau (played by Peter Sellers in most of the films) as he tries to track down the famous Pink Panther diamond. The classic Sellers’ performance is coupled with the ridiculously catchy theme tune and the successful spin off cartoon series.
3. A Fish Called Wanda
Another comedy revolving around Diamond lust. A Fish Called Wanda was written and directed by John Cleese and features a cast of meddling jewel thieves all scrambling over one another to get the diamond. Hilarity ensues.
Michael Mann (before he got all “action and explosions” on us) directed this film back in 1981 and is probably one of the more realistic portrayals of a diamond heist. It’s a true story, based on the memoirs of a real jewel thief, who spent much of his life behind bars.
1. Diamonds Are Forever
How could this not come in at first place. It was Sean Connery’s last film as James Bond and Shirley Bassey had a worldwide hit with the theme tune. The plot is a little far fetched, yes, but nothing quite captures the glitz and the glamour of diamonds like a good James Bond film.
