Sapphire: September’s Birthstone

September is officially upon us, and if you’re lucky enough to be born in this month, you should be rewarding yourself with a giant shimmering blue sapphire on your birthday. Or at least somebody should. The Sapphire is regarded as one of the most beautiful gemstones on the planet, and is a little less commonplace than some of the other gem choices around these days. The cool blue sapphire birthstone is a nice representation of summer’s gradual shift to winter, much like the month of September, therefore making it a perfect gift for any September birthday.

The word “sapphire” simply means “blue” in ancient Greek, and though it’s certainly famous for its rich violet-blue hues (the sapphire is extremely desireable when found in this color) it can also be found in almost every other color imaginable, such as pink, orange, yellow, green and even peach. This makes it quite a diverse option for all of you September babies making your birthday wish lists.

The blue sapphire birthstone, since the middle ages, has represented loyalty, trust and purity, hence the sapphire becoming one of the more popular gemstone choices for engagement rings. Medieval clergymen wore sapphires to represent heaven, while the commoners associated these gemstones with heavenly blessings and powers. This might explain why people bow down to kiss the jewels of the clergymen. To get a taste of heaven!

Sapphires are found in many parts of the world today, but some of the major mines are now found in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka and Kashmir. As a general rule, the more velvety the blue or “sleepy” the sapphire is, the more it will fetch on the international gemstone market. Simply put, the purer the blue, the higher its price will be. Despite this rule of thumb, the most sought after sapphire in the world today would have to be the Padparadscha Sapphire, which is noteable for it’s pinky, salmon hues not too dissimilar from a tropical sunset. These extremely rare and expensive gemstones are now some of the most coveted in the world. So, why not treat yourself to a little slice of heaven this month, and get yourself a stunning new sapphire?
